To help our community get to know Ms Murray a little better, we asked our new Principal, a number of questions about her journey and vision for the school.

We would be grateful if you could please provide a short background paragraph of your education journey
I hold a Human Movement degree, a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education, a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education, a Master of Education, and a Graduate Certificate in Adolescent Health and Wellbeing. Having personally experienced Catholic education at all levels and taught in boys’, co-ed, and girls’ schools, I bring a broad perspective on learning and student development.

What inspired your path into education?
I was drawn to teaching through a desire to work with young people during their secondary years—a pivotal time when they are forming identity, building confidence, and finding their voice. High school teaching offered the opportunity to support both their learning and personal growth. This calling was shaped by my own experience at St Rose, Collaroy Plateau, where I experienced a strong sense of community and exceptional teachers. My Kindergarten teacher, Mrs Wright, in particular, showed me that teaching is a vocation—one where you give of yourself for the growth of others.

What are you most excited for in your role as Principal?
I’m excited to nurture a community where young women are known, challenged, and inspired. Having attended an all-girls Mercy school myself, I experienced the transformative power of belonging, high expectations, and genuine care. As Principal, I want to continue that tradition — empowering students to excel academically, grow in faith, act with conscience, develop their leadership skills, and thrive in their wellbeing.

How do you engage parents, students, and staff?
I engage through relationships, presence, and genuine care. I prioritise being visible in the life of the school, taking time to listen, and ensuring people feel known and valued. I believe in fostering agency — empowering students, staff, and families to have a voice, take responsibility, and contribute meaningfully to our community. When people feel heard and trusted, strong partnerships grow, and a deep sense of belonging follows — and it is within that environment that students thrive.

What do you hope to achieve as Principal at your school?

Mercy College was founded by the Sisters of Mercy 136 years ago, and I am committed to honouring the legacy of those remarkable women who gave so generously of themselves. I want to ensure that the Mercy charism and the teachings of the Gospel are visible in both word and action. I also hope to celebrate the talents and achievements of each of our girls. Most importantly, I want every student to feel known, supported, and inspired to strive for excellence in all areas of her life.

What will you hope to leave as your legacy in education leadership?
I hope to leave a community where every young woman is truly known, grows in confidence, and understands her capacity to lead and make a difference. A place where wellbeing and high expectations work hand in hand, where staff feel trusted and valued, and where relationships remain at the heart of all we do. If the Mercy values continue to be lived authentically each day, then I will know I have led with purpose.
