As part of the St Paul’s Catholic College Academic Enrichment Program, students in Years 5 to 8 engaged in a stimulating two-day Media Literacy Incursion designed to extend learning through inquiry, critical thinking and real-world application. Bringing together Year 7 and 8 Academic Excellence students with talented learners from the St Paul’s Junior Campus, the experience challenged students to examine the modern media landscape, analyse information critically, and develop their communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
Working as a professional newsroom, students took on the role of journalists investigating a hypothetical event. They reviewed evidence, attended a media conference, and crafted news reports and opinion pieces before presenting their final publications to their peers. A key focus of the incursion was exploring media coverage of e-bikes. After evaluating multiple perspectives, students argued that e-bikes should not be banned, but that stronger regulations and safety measures are needed to support their responsible use within the community. The timely topic generated rich discussion and showcased students' ability to think deeply, evaluate evidence and engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues.
