2014 Young Scientist Award

January 27, 2015

Congratulations to Karina Brown in Year 10 from Mercy Catholic College, Chatswood who received a major award in the Science Teachers’ Association of New South Wales Young Scientist Awards Presentation.

Karina was awarded First Place for her work entitled “To compare the size of DNA molecules in different plants” by The Australian Society for Biochemical and Molecular Biology. The award celebrates an exemplary scientific investigation that demonstrated a good understanding of processes in molecular biology.

On her win Karina commented “I am really proud of what I have achieved.  I learnt a lot from the project, especially in terms of problem solving. In my project, I had to devise a way to extract the DNA, separate it from the solution, and then build my own gel electrophoresis chamber out of household items. It was great to be able to apply my research and what I have learnt in class in to real life results. It sparked an interest and I plan to pursue a career in science in the future.”
