St Peter’s Catholic College, Tuggerah Lakes were delighted to welcome Senator Debra O’Neill on 11 November to present at the Remembrance Day Service to a whole school assembly. As a Labor Party Senator for New South Wales, Senator O’Neill has a long history with St Peter’s having taught Religious Education and as Liturgy Co-ordinator from 1993 to 1999.
The Service was beautifully led by the Student Leaders with poems and the Ode of Remembrance.
Senator O’Neill then described in detail her moving visit to the mass unmarked graves at Ypres, the Belgian municipality located in the Flemish province of West Flanders. Her visualisation of the daily evening ceremony at the Menin Gate touched every student and was followed by a minute’s silence and laying of a wreath.
