CATHOLIC KIDS NEED A FAIR DEAL NOT A SPECIAL DEAL

June 16, 2017

It is no secret that the Broken Bay Catholic school community is deeply concerned that our Catholic students could be seriously disadvantaged by the Federal Government’s proposed school funding model changes outlined in the 2017/18 Federal Budget.

The National Catholic Education Commission has written to all federal Senators and MPs outlining the major flaws in the Turnbull Government’s school funding policy and called on them to reject the proposed reforms.

The Government’s planned changes to the Australian Education Act were recently passed in the House of Representatives and they are expected to be debated in the Senate next week. In a media release issued last weekend, then-acting NCEC executive director Danielle Cronin said the many problems with the legislation should be a cause for concern.

“The Government is seeking to implement a 10-year school funding model despite there being widespread criticism of the fundamental issues that determine how the Commonwealth allocates funding to schools and students,” Ms Cronin said.

“The School Funding Estimator website has misled politicians, parents and principals, by providing funding allocations for 2017 that bear no resemblance to the funding schools have already been allocated this year under existing legislation.”
