The results of the fifth National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) were released on 8 September 2014. National testing provides opportunities for governments, education authorities and schools to examine achievements and progress, and to strategically plan for further improvement as a result.
At the Broken Bay Diocesan School System level, results are generally very pleasing. The following positives are worthy of note:
- In all test areas, at every level, the Broken Bay system mean was higher than both state and national averages.
- In Years 3 and 5 the percentage of students in the top two bands was above both state and national figure in all components of NAPLAN. For example, in Year 3 Reading, 68% of systemic school students achieved in the top two bands, compared to 48% of students from NSW and 46% from Australia as a whole.
- In Years 7 and 9 the percentage of students in the top two bands was higher than both state and national figures in the Reading and Writing components of NAPLAN.
- In Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 the percentage of students in the bottom two bands was less than both the state and national figure in all components of the NAPLAN tests.
- In Years 3, 5, 7 and Year 9, the system mean for writing is significantly above both the state and national figure.
