PASS Students to Comm Games

May 31, 2018

50 enthusiastic Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) students from MacKillop Catholic College Warnervale, and a few lucky Teachers headed to the Gold Coast to be part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Students and staff spent the last twelve months preparing for this unique opportunity in anticipation of the historic event.

As part of the preparation, students worked on multiple fundraising events including washing cars and running a BBQ at the local Bunnings. From their efforts, they managed to raise close to $2500 which helped cover some of the costs associated with the trip. Local company MasterFoods assisted with donation of food as well as Kelloggs with breakfast cereals. Students were praised for their enthusiasm and determination to put in the work to make the trip a huge success.

The 6-night tour had many highlights for the students and staff which included the Men’s Hockey, Athletics, Women’s Rugby 7’s and the Marathon. The group also enjoyed a surfing lesson at Coolangatta Beach and some free time in Surfers Paradise at the Live Zones. Part of the daily pleasures was the free time shared together in the afternoons at the beach. Students gained their Bronze Medallion prior to the trip so we could enjoy swimming at the beach and playing soccer and football as a group. Many laughs and memories were shared and many friendships were built and strengthened during this time.

To make this trip afforable, students and staff camped in tents during the trip, cooking the majority of their own meals and utilised the impressive public transport which enabled them to embrace the Games atmosphere with other spectators.

MacKillop Catholic College received many compliments on how well behaved the students were and how they brought such a positive vibe to the events.  This praise is a testament to the students, staff and families at MacKillop.
