Primary school counselling

March 14, 2014

The role of the school counsellor is a varied and rewarding one which relies upon positive collaboration between the counsellor, school principal, teachers and parents in order to facilitate the most positive  outcomes  for students.

In my work as a school counsellor,  student wellbeing is my priority. Identification and assessment of mental health issues amongst the student population is my primary role, however I also work a lot many principals to assist them to support and cater for the needs of these students.

In recent years I have noticed an increase in the number of students suffering from anxiety. I am a strong believer that early recognition of mental health issues in young people with appropriate intervention and treatment is vitally important if we are to provide students with positive educational and life experiences.

Keeping confidential records is vital to this role as is respecting student privacy. Information that is shared is always done so as to effect more positive support and management of young people at school.
