Earlier in the year, a joint project was initiated between St Leo’s Catholic College, Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School at Epping and Our Lady of the Rosary, Waitara.
This project involved liaison between the primary students and senior VET Construction high school students, requiring interaction between the groups to understand each other’s learning environments.
During term 1, St Leo’s high school students visited OLOR kindergarten classes to interact and understand first hand, the way young students learn. Following this visit, OLOR students were then given the opportunity to tour the St Leo’s workshop facilities to see how and where their teaching aids were manufactured. These timber based teaching aids for the kindergarten students ranged from simple sets of blocks through to a class set of timber mobile phones.
Following on from these smaller projects, the senior construction students designed and constructed two timber cubby houses under the guidance of teacher, Mr Chris Sammut. These cubby houses were built using Australian structural standards and current building techniques with industry specific materials.
Our Lady Help of Christians cubby house was recently installed on site and OLOR will soon receive theirs. These cubby houses will form an excellent addition to their school environments and provide endless enjoyment opportunities for the students.
This has been a mutually beneficial experience and hopefully one that can be continued in the future.
