St Brendan’s celebrates Indigenous Parent Engagement Day

September 25, 2018

On Friday the 14th of September we enjoyed our annual Indigenous Parent Engagement Day at St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School, Lake Munmorah.

Parents from across the Diocese were invited to a cultural day, themed ‘Because of her we can’ in keeping with the NAIDOC theme this year.  Aboriginal Education Officers put together a full day beginning with a whole school smoking ceremony and dance by St Brendan’s students. Parents and carers enjoyed interactive activities, storytelling, artefacts and basket weaving while sampling bush tucker. We heard compelling stories some from  life experiences during the stolen generation.

The day was concluded at St Brigid’s Catholic College with a delicious lunch prepared by the hospitality students. Parents were joined by Catholic Schools Office staff including the Aboriginal Education Officer Dave Ella and Director of schools  Peter Hamill, who commented on the great educational gains the Broken Bay Diocese has made in partnership with our Indigenous families.
