Catholic Schools Broken Bay are set to host the Secondary Golf Championships August 25. We also took a moment to learn more about an up and coming star, Angus from Our Lady of Good Counsel, Forestville on his success qualifying for the US Kids Golf World Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina earlier this month! Read below to learn more about his success on the green so far!
How did Angus get started in golf?
Angus took to watching the golf on TV as a little fella and when Tiger Woods won the Masters in 2019, Angus was glued to every shot. For his 3rd birthday Angus received a kid’s size 7 iron. Hitting soft balls in the backyard quickly turned into hitting balls over the house to the front yard. At age 4 Angus started golfing at the Par 3 course in Terrey Hills and since 5 has been a member at Bayview Golf Club.
What is Angus’s training schedule like?
For the past 18 months, Angus has attended golf clinics during the term where the importance is focused on fun activities like putting and chipping to drive enjoyment of the game. Angus has only had a few lessons to help him prepare for the World Golf Championships. The advice by the professionals is to limit coaching and ensure fun prevails.
Angus plays with his dad, Tim, at Bayview Golf Club every second weekend, where they often join some of his peers and their dads where the “Dads versus Lads” focused rounds are one of Angus’ favourite formats. The club hosts Junior Cadet competitions on the weekends and Angus also joins clubs like Long Reef and Monash for fun junior cadet tournaments when available.
What big tournaments has Angus been involved in?
Angus plays two dedicated tournament streams organised by the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation and the US Kids Golf Sydney Tour. Both organisations offer kids tournaments throughout the year where age-appropriate distances cater to younger golfers and increase in distance as they grow in age. The tournaments are based in greater Sydney, regionally and interstate.
Angus has been fortunate to win the past two US Kids Golf Sydney Local Tours for his boys 6 and Underage group. Coupled with the scores he posted during several of the rounds, he recently qualified for the US Kids Golf World Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The competition brings the world’s best junior golfers together to compete in a three round event every August. The opportunity to travel to the USA was simply too exciting to pass up and Angus has recently returned very happy beating his personal goal of a top 50 finish, placing 34th. Posting rounds of +1, +7 and +3 with his very first EAGLE on a par 5. Most importantly he met many friends from around the world and made some lifelong memories with his family and new golfing mates.
Congratulations Angus!
